Doing Something Special for Dad’s 70th!

I think giving thoughtful gifts can be a challenge for many, and I am definitely part of that cohort. So when my Dad’s 70th was approaching I felt like it was time to do something completely custom and unique to celebrate this milestone. Luckily for me, he taught me the game of golf at a young age, and luckily for him, I came to love it so much that I decided to start a business to build and design artificial golf greens! It was pretty clear to me, I’m going to do something special for Dad’s 70th…. I’m building him a badass golf green!!!

Dad’s self-proclamation “As the world’s worst avid golfer” has always been a joke that we laugh about on the golf course, but as a bystander you might not think it’s much of a joke when you catch him around the greens 😬. The importance of the short-game in golf is not something that any golfer would argue, and they would likely say that it is more mentally than physically demanding. I can agree with this sentiment, but it’s also hard to argue that with the right amount of proper practice our mental and physical games can improve exponentially. After a few weeks in a row getting out on the green, my Dad is already attributing his better play and confidence around the greens on the actual golf course to having the green in the backyard and practicing most days even if it’s just for a handful of minutes.

Dad and I finally getting some time to enjoy the green as we wrap up the project

Dad and I finally able to test out the green on the final day of the build!

The goal of the project wasn’t motivated by my desire to help my Dad improve his game unfortunately, but rather to get him outside daily and to stay active doing something that he loves to do. Additionally, life at home should be fun in my opinion, and the golf green adds something fun and functional for him and the rest of the family to enjoy for A LONG time to come.

Before

After!

Only a month or so after finishing his green, it’s already clear that it’s been a success. The jury is still out on the other positive effects it might have for my Dad and the greater family, but I can tell you that family get-togethers (BBQ’s, Holidays, Drop-ins, etc) just got a whole lot more active and fun for the future. I envision countless hours of fun, games, and practice happening for the entire family. Including how this will introduce my 5 year old and 10 month old daughters to a game that I love so much, and might influence them to pick up the game as well. 🤞

While a very physically demanding project, the finished product is something that I am very proud of and I had a blast doing it! Who’s up next????
